building one’s self up by the bootstraps

No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took
And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else’s heart
Pumping someone else’s blood
And walking arm in arm
You hope it don’t get harmed
But even if it does
You’ll just do it all again

“This is how it works” by Regina Spektor

This has been a bit of an internal anthem for me for a while, and I was reminded of it again today.

Today, I made it clear to a friend of mine that I wasn’t romantically interested in him. I’m really bad at doing this sort of thing, because I hate making my friends feel badly. But I was leading him on, however inadvertently, and he’s my friend. You don’t jerk friends around.

Today, I had a very nice conversation with A. A has been in the process of ripping himself apart and rebuilding himself in a way that he likes better. I did a similar thing during high school, but it wasn’t anywhere near as dramatic as him. But he’s happier now, and I am glad. He’s one of the most honest, truly kind people I know.

Yesterday, I had a flash feaver of 102, and skipped out on classes to sleep and take Tylenol. I feel much better now.

i am constantly bemused by the horde of crushes that Miss Shiny trails; it’s such a pity that the really cute ones are BS insane.

dreamwidth, anime detour, convergence (?)

Posted in life with tags , , on April 7, 2009 by pineapplechild

so, i don’t belive i said anything here about it, but dreamwidth is going into open beta at the end of april. and i’ll be buying a paid account, if not a seed account.

there’s a couple of people who said this much more eloquently then i can, but bascially my reasoning is this: i trust dreamwidth’s intentions in the short term, and also in the long term. not only that, but i think they can back up their promises.
i’m really thrilled about this. i haven’t got the serious grudge/anger that a lot of lj expats have against the various Overlords, but i have wanted a better home on the internet for a while now. i think dreamwidth is going to be that– a home.
some links to other people saying things:
synecdochic on building a internet home

anyway. detour. it was this past weekend. i was staff this year, it was awesome.
i actually saw the amvs this year, which was fun. we blew fuses in the consuite twice (ouch) and i warped so many kids. we got a bunch of epic volunteers, most of whom we also tracked down their info so we can get them next year too.
my favorite warping story though, was this kid, he couldn’t have been more then 13– tiny, big eyes, first con with his sister. adoable. he was wandering around looking for something to do untill this panel he wanted to see started, and i told him he should volunteer. he didn’t end up volunteering then, but he seemed swayed. in fact, later when i went to the amv room, he was badging, and i saw him doing so a lot over the weekend.
i am looking forward to being in the sheraton, tho. The Crown Plaza was beautiful, and it was so nice being in a bigger space, but. I dunno. maybe it was because the con’s getting younger again, but it seemed everyone was very messy this year– and i’m not just talking about in the consuite.
I will have to get a hotel room next year tho.

am thinking about going to convergence– friend of mine offered crash space.

Chrome Bag

Posted in life with tags , , on March 30, 2009 by pineapplechild

So, over spring break I received my lovely new chrome bag. It is bright orange and lovely. I also endured a low grade cold, and my hate for driving in downtown Saint Paul, or in Minneapolis in general, or in any place with WAY TOO MANY ONE WAYS, was rekindled.

First, a review of the Chrome bag. This is with the caveat that I haven’t actually managed to go biking in it yet. The inaugural ride is planned for Thursday, when I will be going to set up for Anime Detour. So carrying and walking review only right now.

This is a lovely bag. Well-designed for it’s purpose, well constructed, and actually has enough padding on the strap. For the record, I have a Metropolis, and I got the cellphone “thong” as a friend of mine calls it. I generally *really* like the design. It packs well, and I really look forward to biking with it. I used it as a bag to carry everything back to college, and while my laundry was in a hamper, everything else (All four classes worth of books, various miscellanea like an alarm clock, chargers, dopp kit, etc, computer and computer miscellanea, and some programming books.) It fit it all. Heck, my little brother (6, tall) fits in this bag. (And I could carry him around, were I so inclined to do so.)

Now, for the cons. This is not particularly designed for a woman, or not at least for a woman with real, honest to goodness boobs. (This is a failing of Chrome in general, and the general cycling industry to some extent. I would love some of their super expensive garb as well as the bags if only their pants were cut for women. With hips. And butts.) My friend H and I both got Chrome bags around the same time, and we’ve had to develop some tricks to accommodate the girls. Now, the reverse-amazonian is a trap many messenger bags fall into, but because of Chrome’s particular quirks (ie, the way the strap wraps around the torso), the reverse-amazonian is particularly dire.

(The etymology of the phrase reverse amazonian comes from the Greek myth that Amazons cut off one breast in order to shoot better. In the reverse-amazonian, the bag strap acts as a large underwire, and raises one breast noticeably above the other.)

The solution so far is to use that little stabilizing strap, yes, that one that the internets is griping about as superfluous. Attach that and tighten it so that the strap is pulled away from the breast. Otherwise, I have found that large strap a handy place to rest one’s hand– and pull it away from the breast.

Second grip is the intended placement of the cellphone thong. In all the promotional photos, the men in the photos (and it’s all men, by the by.) appear to have attached the cellphone thong to the arrangement of velcro on the large strap by one’s shoulder. All the men of my acquaintance with Chromes do this as well. However, and this appears to be a female quirk, perhaps because of our boobs, having the cellphone thong in this position seems strangely close to the face. I have instead attached the thong to the seatbelt strap, down by my hip. It slides around some, but is quite easy to grab.

On the other hand, I haven’t had anyone grab for the push button, perhaps because of it’s placement in the depths of my cleavage, and polite people don’t generally put their hands on a woman’s chest without asking, unlike my poor male colleges.

In other words, I had a small misunderstanding with my philosophy professor over my use of the word ‘vacous’. In philosophy terms, that’s insulting, implying an empty head and stupidity. In math terms, it’s a superfluous, empty, proof, generally without the side helping of offense. I used it in the latter, he heard it in the former. Thankfully it was easily cleared up.

So. Watchman, eh?

Posted in life on March 22, 2009 by pineapplechild

Finally went to see it with M. Yanno, sometime I need to sit down and figure out how i feel about the “who watches the watchman” plot– it’s running rampart right now. Batman, Watchman, Civil War, The Incredibles, etc. Because, yes, I probably would rather have police then vigilantes– but I still love me my superheros, like Cap and Ironman .

Anyway, I did love all the gay in Watchman. And yeah, the comic has a serious case of All The Gays Are Dead at the end, but it’s less prominent in the movie. I also love how they play Ozzimandias- strong and smart and clever, and yeah, a villain– but they actually manage to get across his worldview enough (the pharaoh thing, the empire thing, etc) that his Evil Plan To Save the World makes sense. Also, flaming. But not the typical gay villain– Ozzy totally kicks ass.
Also, I kinda want to read some Rorschach&Nite Owl II. There’s totally something going on there, and my slasher goggles cannot be stopped.

ahahaha! sun! warm! music! BLUE CRAYON~!

i apparently am joining a sorority.

i (of course, because this is what i do, apparently) manage to maintain an overly complicated lovelife without actually having a love life. so, all the drama, none of the mackage. this sucks.

i am apparently joining a sorority and have *big plans* to change said sorority.

i appear to have passed my midterms.

i finally bought my chrome bag, a metropolis sized one, orange with a white stripe.

i want the new tassled docs.
